Call to action
About telescope
The main reflector spans 54 meters in diameter — larger than a football field’s width.

At its center, a 2.6-meter optical mirror was installed to capture visible light, while the massive spherical dish focused radio signals.

Instead of rotating like most telescopes, the system used a movable receiver structure above the dish — an engineering solution that was ambitious and complex for its time.

That complexity is part of why the project became so legendary.
Experience
This is not just one telescope.
You explore the surrounding research buildings — shaped by Soviet-era science and engineering.

Nearby stands the AREV solar concentrator, its mirrored structure once designed to focus sunlight with extreme precision.
Inside the complex, you can also visit the anechoic chamber — a space built to absorb sound completely, where silence feels almost physical.

Engineering. Architecture. Mountains. Stillness.

History

In the 1970s, Armenian engineer Paris Herouni proposed an unusual idea for its time: a hybrid telescope that would combine radio and optical observation in one system.

Construction began in 1975 on the slopes of Mount Aragats. Instead of a traditional movable dish, engineers built a 54-meter spherical reflector directly into the mountainside, assembling around 3,600 precisely aligned mirror panels to form its surface.

By the mid-1980s, ROT-54 had become one of the most technically distinctive scientific projects in the Soviet Union. The telescope conducted radio observations of stellar activity and deep-space signals, representing an ambitious attempt to rethink large-scale astronomic

al design. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, funding disappeared and operations gradually stopped. The telescope was not abandoned because it failed — it was abandoned because history changed.

Today, it remains a rare monument to scientific ambition, frozen in time above the clouds.
